Castle in the Clouds – a fantasy

She was a creature of the Sun. But in this land, there were rain and clouds, and with time she became more and more sad and weak. Then her husband, the knight of her heart, built for her a castle on the highest of mountain tops within their lands.

It was, maybe, not the most practical of decisions. But it was made for love, and for his love. And thus his heart and life required it.

Every morning then, he climbed down the mountain tracks to the world below. And come evening, he would take the long trek up into the clouds and beyond. But the cost was small, for his love – she flowered and smiled again!

“It is like sailing on the back of a dragon on the sea of clouds, with only the Sun above us, my love!” she told him, radiant with joy.

“And at night,” he replied with a smile, “the gentle stars will shine for us a path through the darkness.”

  1. A beautiful and touching story! I hope i’m forgiven for what it first reminded me of when I read the first couple of lines…” I built a castle on the swamp and it sank in, so I built another on top of it, and it too sank into the swamp, so I built a third and it too sank into the swamp, but the 4th stayed up!” from ‘Quest for the Holy Grail’ by Monty Python. ps: Your story was sweet.
